The Boathouse                        (click on any image to view a full-size version)

The present boathouse lies on the south side of the island, and can be accessed from land by a long concrete walkway that juts out into the river. This is not the first boathouse to serve Rock Island's visitors and caretakers—it was put in place sometime in the 1920's by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
A view from the inside looking through the boathouse port, due east into the river.
A view of the interior of the boathouse, as seen from the walkway near the boat entrance, showing the lavatory and stairs to the second level.
This sliding door on the second story, immediately behind the stairway, suggests that parts of the upper half of the boathouse were taken from another structure that used to be at ground-level.
A view giving a good idea of the shape and size of the second level; objects strewn on the floor suggest that it was once used for storage or as a workspace.
Perhaps this iron loop was used for hanging or hoisting equipment.
Situated at the end of the second level, furthest from the stairs, the purpose of this device has been forgotten.
