The Smokehouse                       (click on any image to view a full-size version)

The smokehouse is thought to have been built contemporary with the original combination light and keeper's dwelling, erected on the island in 1848. It is of fieldstone construction and was traditionally whitewashed for color.
The interior of the smokehouse was used by keepers in the earliest days for preserving food, such as fish they caught in the river. In later years it has been called the "paint locker."
Ashes and debris on the floor of the smokehouse suggest the structure's former use for smoking food.
The smokehouse is located on the east end of the island, between the shop and the dwelling; here the boathouse can seen behind it.
